Course Overview
This interactive workshop is structured into two parts to benefit in-house counsels and lawyers in private practice to become more cognizant of the expertise they should focus on developing to become more proficient and efficient at composing and organizing written communications and documents including commercial contracts.
The course is aimed at helping attendees hone the following skills:
•Analysing and conceptualizing issues that they want to communicate
•Determining the objective for the drafting - drafting for clarity, drafting for legal analysis and drafting for strategy
•Structuring arguments and documents including strong introductions and conclusions, where required.
•Using core writing techniques, including clarity, cohesion, concision, and Plain English concerns.
Who should attend?
All mid-level seniority and junior in-house counsels and lawyers in private practice who want to hone their non-litigious drafting skills in the English language.
Program
Day 1
Part 1 will cover a quick refresher of basic principles of drafting in plain English, do’s and don’ts of drafting emails and zoom in on drafting for clarity, drafting for legal analysis and drafting for strategy. The attendees will break-out in groups to do drafting exercises where the trainer will furnish them with feedback while she goes round the room.
Day 2
Part 2 will discuss the basic principles of drafting commercial contracts, issues to consider when putting together a commercial contract and explore amending some sample clauses based on differing sets of instructions from clients. It will also discuss the considerations to bear in mind when drafting international contracts where the parties are from different jurisdictions. This segment will conclude with attendees drafting a communication for strategy and putting together the framework for a commercial contract which does not have any template.

Sheela Awat is a seasoned and business savvy legal counsel with 25 years experience across Asia-Pacific gained at two international law firms, combined with a proven track record functioning as Asia-Pacific regional counsel as part of the regional management team for two global multinationals – a Fortune 500 group listed in New York and another multinational listed in London.
