Event Overview

In today’s culture where “I” matters most and our own self-interests has become king, are we really taking the time to peer through our little bubbles and comfort zones to understand the people around us? How far are we from being appropriately inclusive, be it noticeable or subtle, or is diversity and inclusion (D&I) just another checklist at the workplace and with friends?

Here’s why we should be concern:

• Harvard Business Review indicates that 78% of employees said they work at organisations that lack diversity in leadership positions¹.
• On the topic of alienating co-workers and team members, Harvard Business Review found that 78% said their commitment to the organization declined because of toxic behaviour².
• Findings by Brandon Gaille saw that claims for disability benefits have climbed by more than 600% in some countries because of a lack of job opportunities. And in the UK, it is estimated that over 100 hate crimes are committed daily against individuals with disabilities³.
• In a survey by the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP), nearly 2 out of 3 workers aged 45 and older have seen or experienced age discrimination on the job. And among the 61% of respondents who reported age bias, 91% said they believe that such discrimination is common⁴.

This year’s D&I flagship event will showcase three short feature films tackling subjects on toxic work environments, discrimination of disability and ageism – all of which are relevant and is a primary concern to the workforce in Singapore. SCCA, will focus on the topic of ego-centrism, how such characteristics has taken root in our lives and the impact it has made to our society and the world.

Speakers Profile

Mr Patrick Tay 郑德源

Assistant Secretary-General, NTUC

Patrick Tay is the Assistant Secretary-General of NTUC and Member of Parliament of West Coast GRC. He currently chairs the Government Parliamentary Committee for Manpower and co-chairs the Financial Sector Tripartite Committee with the Monetary Authority of Singapore.  

As Director of NTUC’s Legal Services and Strategy, he represents the Labour Movement in tripartite workgroups to review/update employment and industrial relations legislation and has been pivotal in lobbying for the many changes to manpower related laws and policies in Singapore.  

He is also the Executive Secretary for Banking & Financial Services Union and Singapore Manual & Mercantile Workers’ Union. 

As legal adviser to NTUC-affiliated unions in Singapore, he has advised/represented numerous unions/members in complex and contentious issues, dispute resolution, conciliation and in the Industrial Arbitration Court.

Melissa Koh 

Managing Director, Legal, ASEAN and China

Melissa is currently the ASEAN and Greater China Complex Contracting Lead in Accenture, a leading global professional services company, providing a broad range of services and solutions in strategy, consulting, digital, technology and operations.

Having worked in Accenture’s offices in Hong Kong, China and current based out of Singapore, Melissa leads a team of lawyers in ASEAN and Greater China, negotiating and providing legal support and risk mitigation strategies for complex consulting, information technology, outsourcing and digital contracts with Accenture’s clients.

Prior to Accenture, Melissa was an IP lawyer at Lee and Lee and graduated with her LLB from the National University of Singapore.  She has a keen interest in artificial intelligence, cloud, blockchain, cybersecurity and other new and emerging technologies relating to the services which Accenture provides.
